Training and Personal Development

In many instances you may need some training to develop in your role, this may be technical training, or training in softer skills such as people management or managing your time effectively.

As well as ‘what’ we learn, its important to consider ‘how’ we learn so that we can maximise our opportunities for development. The 70:20:10 concept shows us that the majority of learning and development happens on the job and from others we work with, this is key to know as it supports more formal development such as e-learning or training courses.

Learning can happen in many ways, when you want and how you want it, including:

  • Having a read of a book or magazine
  • Talking to a friend or colleague, ask a question!
  • Doing some online research
  • Coaching or mentoring from your manager
  • Attending a webinar
  • Learning from your mistakes
  • Completing an e-learning course
  • Attending a face to face course
  • An apprenticeship
  • Taking on a challenging task or project
  • Job shadowing

The opportunities are endless, it is up to you to seize the moment and see it as a learning opportunity!

If you do require some external training this may be funded by the company if it is essential for your role or identified as a development opportunity. This should be discussed with your line manager who will submit a training request if it is agreed that the training is beneficial to both the individual and the company.

In some cases, normally when training is long term and developmental, a training agreement will be drawn up to agree what will be funded and how, as well as any repayments needed in case of non-completion or failure of the course, or even if you leave the business before the training is realised. This will be discussed and agreed with HR before communicating it to you for agreement.

Where exams or formal qualifications are taking place study leave may also be granted in agreement with your line manager, this would normally be the day of the exam, and maybe a day before to prepare and revise, dependant on the type of study being undertaken. This would normally be paid leave.
